The sample_plugin_doc.md file refers to VPP_WITH_SAMPLE_PLUGIN make

Split generation of API message enum and the typedefs into
separate files, so that the type file can be included from
elsewhere.
Generate a C file for VPP that contains the API registration,
this was previously done via X macros by the C pre-
processor.
This allows deleting lots of skeleton/copy paste code
for each feature.
plugins/flowprobe
plugins/map
examples/sample-plugin
vnet/ipip
used as Guinea pigs.
Generate a C Test file for VAT, that does the same for VAT plugins.
Also add support for a per-message CLI option, that is currently
limited to VAT help text. option vat_help = "<help text>";

In addition to the external vppapitrace tool, VPP itself supports dumping of API trace files.
In two formats, "custom-dump" and "dump". "dump" gives a human friendly list,
and "custom-dump" is meant to give a list of commands that can be fed to VAT.
This patch only deals with "dump".
Prior to this fix, auto-generation was only done for the basic types.
This fix adds support for any type, including lists, and supports pretty-printing
of enums, strings, IP addresses, MAC addresses and so on.
Usage: api trace dump <api-trace-file>
For example

To the sample plugin. We should probably suggest that folks use the
pipeline.h coding model more often. It's really easy, and these days
the performance results are similar to quad-single loop coding.

If the corresponding vpp plugin is absent, return a non-zero
clib_error_t * from vat_plugin_register ("xxx plugin not loaded"). The
vat plugin calls dlclose on the vat plugin, and it disappears.
Depending on the plugin configuration, this can reduce the vpp virtual
size by several gigabytes.
Added a VAT_PLUGIN(<plugin-name>) macro to vat_helper_macros, clean up
boilerplate vat_plugin_register() implementations. Fixed a number of
non-standard vat_plugin_register methods.

The vlib init function subsystem now supports a mix of procedural and
formally-specified ordering constraints. We should eliminate procedural
knowledge wherever possible.
The following schemes are *roughly* equivalent:
static clib_error_t *init_runs_first (vlib_main_t *vm)
{
clib_error_t *error;
... do some stuff...
if ((error = vlib_call_init_function (init_runs_next)))
return error;
...
}
VLIB_INIT_FUNCTION (init_runs_first);
and
static clib_error_t *init_runs_first (vlib_main_t *vm)
{
... do some stuff...
}
VLIB_INIT_FUNCTION (init_runs_first) =
{
.runs_before = VLIB_INITS("init_runs_next"),
};
The first form will [most likely] call "init_runs_next" on the
spot. The second form means that "init_runs_first" runs before
"init_runs_next," possibly much earlier in the sequence.
Please DO NOT construct sets of init functions where A before B
actually means A *right before* B. It's not necessary - simply combine
A and B - and it leads to hugely annoying debugging exercises when
trying to switch from ad-hoc procedural ordering constraints to formal
ordering constraints.

but vlib_frame_args was providing pointer to scalar frame
data, not vector data. To avoid future confusion function

Net of rewriting vppapigen in python-ply, there's no need to compile
vppinfra.
Install a copy of vppapigen in .../build-root/tools/bin, so
the sample plugin build will work. Rationalize suffix-rules.mk.
Add clang, clang++ links to .../build-root/ccache-bin.

This is a version of the VPP API generator in Python PLY. It supports
the existing language, and has a plugin architecture for generators.
Currently C and JSON are supported.
Changes:
- vl_api_version to option version = "major.minor.patch"
- enum support
- Added error checking and reporting
- import support (removed the C pre-processor)
- services (tying request/reply together)
Version:
option version = "1.0.0";
Enum:
enum colours {
RED,
BLUE = 50,
};
define foo {
vl_api_colours_t colours;
};
Services:
service {
rpc foo returns foo_reply;
rpc foo_dump returns stream foo_details;
rpc want_stats returns want_stats_reply
events ip4_counters, ip6_counters;
};
Future planned features:
- unions
- bool, text
- array support (including length)
- proto3 output plugin
- Refactor C/C++ generator as a plugin
- Refactor Java generator as a plugin

- Global variables declared in header files without
the use of the 'extern' keword will result in multiple
instances of the variable to be created by the compiler
-- one for each different source file in which the
the header file is included. This results in wasted
memory allocated in the BSS segments as well as
potentially introducing bugs in the application.

- Teach vpp_api_test to send/receive API messages over sockets
- Add memfd-based shared memory
- Add api messages to create memfd-based shared memory segments
- vpp_api_test supports both socket and shared memory segment connections
- vpp_api_test pivot from socket to shared memory API messaging
- add socket client support to libvlibclient.so
- dead client reaper sends ping messages, container-friendly
- dead client reaper falls back to kill (<pid>, 0) live checking
if e.g. a python app goes silent for tens of seconds
- handle ping messages in python client support code
- teach show api ring about pairwise shared-memory segments
- fix ip probing of already resolved destinations (VPP-998)
We'll need this work to implement proper host-stack client isolation

This patch deprecates stack-based thread identification,
Also removes requirement that thread stacks are adjacent.
Finally, possibly annoying for some folks, it renames
all occurences of cpu_index and cpu_number with thread
index. Using word "cpu" is misleading here as thread can
be migrated ti different CPU, and also it is not related
to linux cpu index.
