Enforce that variable length fields are the last element of API messages.
Add a 'fixed' version of string type, since dealing with
multiple variable length strings turned out too painful
for the C language bindings.
The string type is now:
{
string name[64]; // NUL terminated C-string. Essentially decays to u8 name[64]
string name[]; // Variable length string with embedded len field (vl_api_string_t)
};
The latter notation could be made available to other types as well.
e.g.
{
vl_api_address_t addresses[];
}
instead of
{
u32 n_addr;
vl_api_address_t addresses[n_addr];
};

vppapigen has remapped legacy to typedefs behind the scenes
for some time now.
- update .api files to use new style typedefs.
- issue error on 'typeonly define' in .api files
- remove unneeded macros redefining vl_noop_handler

Now that we have support for f64:
- create explicit types for timestamp(datetime)/timedelta
- update log_details to use timestamp and remove redundant string representation.
If you need the string representation, in python do str(timestamp).
If you prefer the raw f64 value, the client can pass in the
_no_type_conversion option.

clib_net_to_host_f64, clib_host_to_net_f64 are now implemented as '=',
https://gerrit.fd.io/r/#/c/20406/ set papi to match.
- all f64 api references are now wrapped with
clib_net_to_host_f64 or clib_host_to_net_f64.
IEEE f64 endianess is not defined. If clib_net_to_host_f64 and
clib_host_to_net_f64 are later defined in VPP as big-endian, it is
a single character change in the papi vpp_serializer.
Note: This breaks the api in a manner that would not be detected by
the flag day initiative. The scope is small. This only impacts map.api,
which applied the u64 transformation, while the gbp api uses '='.
The implementation of "=" raises issues for the papi socket implementation
if used between systems of differing endianess. See Vratko's comments.
- Added get_f64_endian_value() to api to allow client to verify endianess of f64's.

- Replaces the need to screen scrape "show log".
- Adds an api to return the system time. When running over a socket, the
api client may have different time than the vpp host.
expected use:
vpp_time_before_command = self.vapi.show_vpe_system_time_ticks().vpe_system_time_ticks
<run some commands>
log_output = self.vapi.log_dump(start_timestamp=vpp_time_before_command)

This is a version of the VPP API generator in Python PLY. It supports
the existing language, and has a plugin architecture for generators.
Currently C and JSON are supported.
Changes:
- vl_api_version to option version = "major.minor.patch"
- enum support
- Added error checking and reporting
- import support (removed the C pre-processor)
- services (tying request/reply together)
Version:
option version = "1.0.0";
Enum:
enum colours {
RED,
BLUE = 50,
};
define foo {
vl_api_colours_t colours;
};
Services:
service {
rpc foo returns foo_reply;
rpc foo_dump returns stream foo_details;
rpc want_stats returns want_stats_reply
events ip4_counters, ip6_counters;
};
Future planned features:
- unions
- bool, text
- array support (including length)
- proto3 output plugin
- Refactor C/C++ generator as a plugin
- Refactor Java generator as a plugin

Add one of these statements to foo.api:
vl_api_version 1.2.3
to generate a version tuple stanza in foo.api.h:
/****** Version tuple *****/
vl_api_version_tuple(foo, 1, 2, 3)

Notes on this first implementation:
* First version of the implementation does NOT support GENEVE OPTIONS
HEADER: it isn't well understood what the purpose of the OPTIONS will be and/or
what content would be placed in the variable option data;
Once the IETF work will evolve and further information will be available
it could be possible to modify the frame rewrite to contemplate the
actual GENEVE OPTIONS.

An external (to VPP) process can register (over the VPP binary API) to
receive control plane packets over a UNIX domain socket. The packets are
prepended with a packet descriptor containing meta-data (if_index of
interface, etc).
Currently only UDP is supported.
The socket supports sending of packets/frames as well.
The sent packet is prepended with a descriptor, telling VPP to
route the packet (via ip4-lookup, ip6-lookup) or as an pre-formed
Ethernet frame that is sent directly to interface-output.
The intended use case for this is for an external DHCP client or
a RIP implementation.
New configuration option:
punt { socket <socket path> }
To register use the punt_socket API message.
TODO:
- Add support for pre-routing. I.e send L3 packet to given
TX interface, but do ARP/ND (ip[46]-rewrite)
- Add test scripts
- Support for abstract names (starting with \0)
- Add rate limiting (COP)
- Support for other protocols, e.g. IPv6 ND

To support creating loopback interfaces with a specific
instance number, a new CREATE_LOOPBACK_INSTANCE API call
with flag is_specified and value user_instance is introduced.
Presumably the existing CREATE_LOOPBACK API message will be
obsoleted and revmoved.
The VAT cli commands can now mention and format
the new field as 'instance %d' data. If no instance
number is named, the old call CREATE_LOOPBACK is used
to maintain backward compatibility. However, if the
instance is named, the new CREATE_LOOPBACK_INSTANCE
message will be used.
Both the dynamically allocated and user-requested instance
number are tracked in a bitvector. If is_specified is 0,
the next free instance will be used.. A request for a specific
instance number will be granted if it is available. On error,
the value ~0 is returned.
